Dec 15 FSD Board Meeting

At its December 15 Board Meeting, Fullerton School District has planned (and posted on its website) this presentation regarding the results of the Listening Tour conducted in Fall 2020, in which a series of focus groups, comprised of community members, reflected on and talked about their experiences with racial and social justice in FSD.

The documents found by following the above link include the district’s presentation, short- and long-term district goals related to culture and equity, and a summary of recommendations from the district to the Board (this final document is by far the most comprehensive).

As we have discussed in recent FSD Collective meetings, these recommendations focus primarily on cultural awareness and inclusion (lessons about culture, International Day celebrations, etc), and are less explicit regarding the district’s goals regarding equity, anti-bias education, etc.

The district is also calling for the development of a “task force” to guide their work regarding equity; we consider it essential that this task force include FSD employees as well as outside scholars and community leaders with experience & expertise regarding racial equity, justice & anti-racist teaching.

In sum, we see the proposed recommendations as a starting point for Fullerton School District, but far from an end point to this work.

We encourage community members to read the recommendations, and submit a short public comment or individual email to Board Members indicating:

a) your continued support/demand for equity-oriented education and policy in Fullerton School District,

b) the importance of focusing on historical and contemporary issues of equity in addition to celebrations of diversity, and

c) why these ideas are important to you and your family.

How to write to Board Members:

The board members are much more responsive to individual emails and comments than letters with multiple signatures. So please do not simply copy and paste, but instead make them your own with a personal introduction and statement, and share your thoughts in an email, phone call, or meeting by Tuesday Dec. 15 at 2pm.

Send an email to the FSD Board Members, using the contact information found here. While people are welcome to meet, call or email all, you may wish to prioritize your own trustee representing your home area. A map of the 5 areas is here.

How to submit a public comment:

To submit a “public comment” (meaning your comments will be read aloud during the Board Meeting), you can email them to the Board here (must be received by 2 PM on Tuesday 12/15) OR attend the meeting in person. People attending in person will have 3 minutes to speak.

How to attend or watch the meeting:

The meeting will begin at 6PM at the District Administration Offices Board Room, 1401 W. Valencia Drive, Fullerton. Attendees at the Board Meeting will adhere to physical distancing, wear a face mask covering (mask), and their temperature will be taken.

You can also watch the livestream of the meeting here. The streaming will begin at 6PM.

The agenda for the Board Meeting is posted here. Currently, Public Comments are Item 8 on the agenda, and the Listening Tour Presentation is 12th on the agenda.
